Adopt A Family 2023: Creating Warm Memories

Each year, KYC hosts anAdopt A Family drive to connect people we serve with extra holiday cheer.

For many of the clients and community members we serve, the holidays can be a truly challenging time. They may be struggling to afford basic needs items or gifts for their children or families, or they may not have family or friends nearby with whom to connect; for these community members, the holidays can exaggerate feelings of stress, worry, and loneliness.

Through our Adopt A Family program, we seek to connect the people we serve with much-needed and greatly appreciated holiday gifts, so that they can focus on achieving their goals and find joy in the holiday season.

Generous community members can purchase gifts or provide gift cards for local individuals and families to empower them to shop for items that they need. While the gifts themselves can be essential, we always hear from clients who receive gifts through this program that they get so much more than a gift: this program gives them connectedness to our community, and makes them feel valued, remembered, and appreciated.

By making a gift to this program, you truly make the holidays for the community members we serve together.

Nina, 12, recently joined her school’s volleyball team. She just started playing and discovered her love for the sport. Sports like volleyball allow Nina to build her confidence and resilience while making new, lasting friendships. During the holiday season, Nina was gifted a volleyball in support of her new activity. She was immediately excited when she saw her gift and wanted to practice right away. Generous donors like you provide Nina with a safe and healthy outlet.

Nathan, 10, was experiencing anxiety due to the changes that came from one of his parents losing their job. Unsure how he would be able to partake in the tradition of gift-giving for his siblings, Nathan was nominated through our Adopt A Family event. With caring gifts like yours, he received a gift card which allowed him the freedom and courage to gift something small to his siblings, allowing his confidence to grow. Being able to participate in this holiday custom gave Nathan joy.

Keep Seniors Warm.

John, 70, is a recent widower after being a caregiver for his partner, Charlie. Living on a fixed income left John unsure of his options for supplemental care. After reaching out to KYC, he was provided many options like care coordination and home delivered meals to continue aging safely in place after a major life event. John’s case manager noticed that he did not have a warm enough jacket for the winter months. Thoughtful donations from community partners like you during our Adopt A Family event supplied John with winter gear to ensure he stays stays safe.

Lola, a single mother with her 3‑year-old child, began to seek therapeutic services at KYC. Lola was struggling financially as she recently lost her job during the holiday season. She did not have the means to provide holiday gifts to her child. Her clinician nominated her to receive support through our Adopt A Family event. With kind gifts like yours, Lola was able to bring her child to her session where she received a gift for her. Being able to watch her child enjoy a holiday gift provided Lola with a sense of community and gifted her with an opportunity to join in the festivities of the holiday.

Daniel, a single parent of 4 children, struggles with their mental health which made it difficult to find and keep a job. Because Daniel was not working and lower-income, they were unable to gift their children presents for Christmas. Daniel’s clinician nominated them to receive support through our Adopt A Family event. With donations by community members like you, Daniel received a gift card which made it possible to give something small to each of their children to open on Christmas Day. Your thoughtfulness helped to create a lifelong memory for Daniel and their children to share.

Our community members are so grateful for the thoughtfulness and generosity you give with each holiday gift. Your gifts make a meaningful impact for our staff members as well! One of our Managers shares that she is grateful to our donors because their generosity helps inspire clients and continues to lift their spirits. This in turn helps them to feel better in whatever situation they are facing. Now more than ever, in a post-pandemic environment, when there is greater insecurity with housing and work. She emphasizes that for clients that are experiencing homelessness or severe mental health challenges, these gifts help bring a sense of community and acceptance.

Likewise, a clinician who serves children and adolescents extends her gratitude to all of our wonderful donors who participate in this annual event. She mentions that it is always wonderful to be able to participate in the Adopt A Family Event and to be a conduit for the generosity of our donors. The families we serve may come from many backgrounds, but one thing they all agree on is their desire to feel and do better. Through donations like yours, we are able to provide them with gifts that represent the efforts they have put into making change in their lives and the lives of their family members. She says donations like yours change lives, donations like yours save lives. Your continued generosity gives us all hope for a better future.
