How Your Hustle Helps Community Members Thrive
By working together, we can make sure that every person is connected to the resources that they need to live their safest, healthiest lives. Here are just a few of the ways that your participation in Kenneth Young Center’s Hustle for Health 5K Run/Walk make a big impact in the lives of the people we serve together.
Help Kids like DeVon Succeed Despite Stress
DeVon is an elementary school student who loves watching his favorite superheroes on TV and building planes with Legos. He was very excited to return to school in-person every day this school year, but has experienced difficulty adjusting back to being around so many of his peers rather than at home with his family. Since returning to the classroom, DeVon has been easily distracted by conversations with his buddies, and sometimes has trouble remembering to follow the teacher’s rules. His parents were looking for some additional support and found the perfect partnership with a therapist from KYC.
DeVon meets with his therapist every week to spend some time talking through his thoughts on his classes while he used his passion for building as a constructive outlet for his extra energy. DeVon is now happily learning in class each day, and has developed a healthier relationship with both his teacher and classmates. Your support of the Hustle for Health helps youth like DeVon navigate the challenges of growing up.
Help Older Adults like Priya Age Happily In Place
Priya is a retired healthcare worker who was considering moving into a nursing home when she first connected with KYC. One of her friends was enrolled in KYC’s Home Delivered Meals program, and recommended Priya give KYC a call.
Working side-by-side, Priya and her KYC Care Coordinator developed a comprehensive care plan and found that with a few in-home supports, Priya could safely live independently in the community. Her Coordinator helped Priya navigate the benefits she needed to remain in her own home, and continues to offer support for as long as she and her family need.
Just recently, Priya called her Care Coordinator to express her gratitude for the KYC staff members in her life. She shared that she feels that KYC has helped her feel dignity while remaining supported, and she was grateful for the team’s commitment to helping her. She emphasized that this is a new beginning for her, and that she is making progress and reinventing herself thanks to KYC. Your support of the Hustle for Health helps connect older adults with the resources they need to thrive while living as independently as possible.
Connect Community Members Like Eddie with Stability
Eddie hadn’t had stable housing for more than a decade. Despite his efforts to gain stable employment, Eddie experienced difficulty keeping jobs, and in turn, his apartment, due to his mental health challenges. After bouncing from sleeping on friends’ couches or staying at shelters, he was connected with KYC through the County’s permanent supportive housing application. When he was accepted to the program, KYC’s Community Living team helped move him in and made sure he felt at home. While the adjustment to the routine of his new living situation came slowly, KYC staff were there every step of the way to offer support with managing emotions and developing healthy living habits.
After a few years, Eddie was able to move to a new apartment near his family. He now enjoys watching sports and movies with friends, and because of his stable job, Eddie is no longer nervous about his living situation. Your support of the Hustle for Health helps people like Eddie reach their goals!
